I've tested that this works on Ubuntu, under Unity. I took a brief stab at a fix, by converting the supplied 512x512 icon into different sizes and installing, but that didn't seem to help. I ran strace for both Ubuntu and Gentoo, and from what I can tell, it's extracting the png from some other binary into a file in /tmp. That works on Ubuntu, but fails on Gentoo. Perhaps it's a libpng version difference (or my theory could be totally wrong..).

I am not sure that I understand you right, but I see an icon in system tray on a both provided screenshots.

I have marked what I treat as system tray icon.

Or you had to do something to achieve that icon appears on gentoo.png and there is something that ebuild does not do that it should?

Clarify this, please.

Sure. I may be using the wrong term. I do get the same icon you refer to (which is good). Notice at the bottom left of the screen, there are two entries for open windows (Firefox and Slack). The Firefox entry has a proper icon for firefox, where as the Slack icon is a generic placeholder. If you look at the Ubuntu screenshot I posted, there is a Slack icon in the equivalent area (bottom left, just below terminal icon), rather than a generic placeholder. I'd like to see the same on Gentoo.
