Description Pantelis Panayiotou 2004-09-02 06:55:37 UTC
I think it would be nice if the printing howto had a section for configuring printers that rely on the hpoj package. These include many popular HP printers, including most of the OfficeJets, and some recent DeskJets and LaserJets.

Installing these printers involves configuring and starting the ptal daemon, and then configuring CUPS to use a ptal device, e.g. ptal://mlc:usb:hp_LaserJet_1150. Configuring CUPS to directly use a devfs device, such as /dev/usb/lp0 does _not_ work with these printers.

Timeout. Marking as LATER. Keeping bug in mind (mentioned in metadoc)

Reopening since I am doing a rewrite

hpoj is deprecated in favor of hplip. There are some instructions on hplip in
the rewrite (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/draft/printing-howto.xml is
the draft location). With current cups and hplip, configuring the printer is as
easy as using the CUPS web interface.

Fixed in CVS.
