When I was installing gentoo a couple of days ago, I came to the grub section and found that it had changed to use grub-install instead. However, when I tried running this script it kept telling me that there was no BIOS entry for my main hard drive (/dev/hda) so I couldn't continue the way the handbook suggested. Instead, I had to piece together from the GNU Grub site and my memory of previous installations how to do this from scratch. What I would like to see is the return of the manual grub configuration (i.e. grub> setup(hd0) etc.) to the docs as a fallback option - e.g. "if grub-install fails to work for some reason, here's how to do it manually <insert disclaimer about GNU not recommending this method>". Before anyone accuses me of not searching, I have found and read #46828 and I have no problems with grub-install being used over manual configuration. However, if it doesn't work on a particular machine for whatever reason, it would be nice to have the manual method available. The easiest workaround would be to grab the old docs from CVS and just re-add the relevant part with a short explanation. Reproducible: Didn't try Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
Absolutely correct. I will reinstate the manual grub installation instructions as an alternative with the "not recommended by main authors"-warning. I'll leave the bug unassigned for the time being so other docdevs can take it sooner if they wish, I can only reinstate them as early as fridaymorning or saturday (UTC).
Fixed in CVS.
