The following ebuild line leaves hier.c a zero-length file, and thus breaks the linkage looking for hier().

# grep -v man hier.c | grep -v doc > hier.c

How about

# grep -v man hier.c | grep -v doc > hier.tmp; mv hier.tmp hier.c

?
