I've followed along with mpv updates as they are released, installing the following since last August: media-video/mpv-0.19.0, media-video/mpv-0.20.0, media-video/mpv-0.21.0, media-video/mpv-0.22.0, media-video/mpv-0.22.0-r1, media-video/mpv-0.23.0, media-video/mpv-0.23.0-r1, media-video/mpv-0.24.0. All of these have worked fine (for me, at least), and all have been pulled from the tree with new releases. Now, since mpv-0.25.0 was released, I have no audio. Steps to reproduce: 1. USE="-libav" in make.conf or package.use or whatever 2. Update mpv to 0.25.0 (or the more recent 0.25.0-r1) 3. note lack of audio. masking 0.25* in package.mask downgrades me to 0.18.0-r1, which has working audio. Please attach a small example file that causes this issue and the output of `mpv -v <your_example_file.here>` command.
Andrew, please provide the requested info. Missing audio is easy to notice, but you seem to be the only one affected. It looks like this problem is specific to your system.

d'oh, thanks for the reminder (had to give a lecture last night, was a bit distracted). Anyway, I'm attaching a short video file that, on my setup (~amd64, using smplayer as a frontend) mpv-0.25* does not play audio, but mpv-0.18 does. I see nothing in the logs, nor any console output. grrrr … UPDATE: running 'mpv travis\ werk\ it.mp4' from the console has audio, so this is not mpv. Something's wrong with how smplayer interacts with mpv (different between the two versions) that is causing audio to fail. Drat. Now I'm stuck :(

I have smplayer-16.11.0 with mpv backend and your video plays fine (with audio). Please attach smplayer log (Ctrl+S) and backend log (Ctrl+M) when playing this video in smplayer. It could help. P.S. Here's your problem (from backend log): [drc] libavfilter filter 'drc' not found! Couldn't create or open audio filter 'drc' Error at audio filter chain pre-init! Audio: no audio The filter was removed in this commit: https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/commit/222899fbbe523320e66ae1600fabe45b58d48686 Commit message also has instructions how to replace it. If you want it restored, please ask upstream directly. Due to a very dynamic nature of mpv you should look through changelogs (installed automatically) after mpv update if you use ANY additional options. I try to cover all important changes in default configuration via postinst messages. Thank you for understanding.
adding '--af=lavfi=[acompressor]' to the Options to pass to mpv in the Advanced menu restored audio for me. Thanks for clarifying. I'm curious how I ended up adding the 'drc' option in the first place, but no matter: it's fixed. Cheers.
