Description Jason Downs 2017-06-24 17:19:29 UTC
I'm sorry that I did not save any output from my attempt(s), but I am here to report that the PPC64 64bit stage3 (from 2015!) no longer works for installation purposes.

Portage doesn't work at all-- it's too old to use anything from the repo, even to the point of no longer being able to update itself.

The stage3 archive either needs to be regenerated. removed from the download page, or at least marked as "BROKEN" so that others don't also waste their time with it.

There do exist neither stage3s:

http://distfiles.gentoo.org/releases/ppc/autobuilds/

However they aren't well advertised on the website...

Thanks for the link with the autobuild! Whereby me too would prefer a 'known good' official build.
Comment 3 Jason Downs 2017-06-24 18:06:54 UTC
Is latest-stage3-ppc64 32 or 64bit?
Comment 4 Jason Downs 2017-06-24 18:13:23 UTC
And to answer my own question, it's 64bit:

bin/ls: ELF 64-bit MSB executable, 64-bit PowerPC or cisco 7500, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked, interpreter /lib64/ld64.so.1, for GNU/Linux 2.6.32, stripped

I've restarted automated stage builds on timberdoodle. The web page now links to a new ISO and 32-bit ppc build but still links to old ppc64-64ul and ppc64-32ul builds. Those are going away and are replaced with a regular ppc64 build (which is identical to what ppc64-64ul was).

Marking this bug as dependent on bug 666500 -- not a duplicate since I'm not sure if there's website code that hardcodes ppc64-32ul/64ul instead of just ppc64.

It is not really *hrdcoded* but rather scans distfiles.g.o by the set of tags, so should we just replace userland build links with
http://distfiles.gentoo.org/releases/ppc/autobuilds/current-stage3-ppc64/

?
