I'll start to work on an ebuild for this as soon as I get home and check to make sure everything works.
That's cool. I will try to make also ebuild for GMailFS.
Created attachment 38436 [details] libgmail-0.0.8.ebuild This works great for me, using the test script on the homepage.
Wow, it looks like you guys are on top of this one...just got back from church and it's already done!
please respect Google and don't use GMailFS, it's unintended use of the service.
I would also like to echo what David said. I wasn't thinking of gmailfs, but rather, I would like to use evolution to obtain the gmail at times. Put libgmail in portage, but please leave gmailfs out.
I understand this point, David, thanks for remindering me about it. I have even read their Terms of Use. They writes "You also agree that you will not use any robot, spider, other automated device, or manual process to monitor or copy any content from the Service". Now, i'm not sure if using libgmail just to check mail isn't abusing of gmail. Say what do you think.
I'm kinda wondering about libgmail too now. If we put it in portage and 100s of people get their accounts cancelled... well I don't want my name on that CVS commit ;)

Maybe you could put a ewarn about gmail saying that, "You could get your gmail account cancelled if you use this software" or something like that.
no- Gentoo will maintain professional courtesy to companies such as google. Since using gmailfs is a violation of their terms of use. According to the Program Policies you agree to when signing up, you will not: * Modify, adapt, translate, or reverse engineer any portion of the Gmail Service Also, this section makes the use of libgmail against the policies: * Reformat or frame any portion of the web pages that are part of the Gmail Service The libgmail package does reformat a portion of the webpage to obtain your email. As such, it will not be placed into portage until we get word from a google authority that use of these utilities is allowed. Thank you for your interest in this package, and feel free to reopen this bug once the above issues are resolved.

Hello Jon, Thank you for your message. Google does not endorse third party applications meant to interact with Gmail. Please also note that we do not provide support for such applications. For more information, please refer to the Gmail Program Policies by visiting: http://gmail.google.com/gmail/help/program_policies.html. We hope you enjoy Google's approach to email. Sincerely, The Gmail Team
If that isn't just a canned reply message, then it sounds like its ok, since they didn't say it violates anything on that page. And they they don't explicitly say "no" but said they won't offer support for third party applications.
It took me 3 tries to get that message (their standard one was not-so-helpful). I was looking at: "Google does not endorse third party applications meant to interact with Gmail....refer to the Gmail Program Policies by visiting: http://gmail.google.com/gmail/help/program_policies.html." This doesn't specifical ban the use of libgmail, but the "program policies" they refer to do. If you think this means they wouldn't mind, I would maintain libgmail in portage.
The return of libgmail means the returns of the use flag gmail in programs like mail-notification?
I've been in contact with a former dev (sj7trunks) who is now a google employee in regards to this bug. He contacted some internal people at google and googles stand on this is they don't care if we include it or people use gmailfs or not. They are probably not going to suspend any accounts either but they want to make it really clear they they do not support 3rd party programs. So don't bug them ever or cry or complain if it all the sudden stops working.
I'm not in favor of adding it. On one side, users would really appreciate it and support for gmail is emerging in many packages. On the other side, it's not allowed (even though Google let it all slip through the fingers) and it might be a public relations nightmare in articles. As long as Google doesn't explicitly state that it allows libgmail and other 3rd party tools (but without supporting them) I wouldn't touch it. Just my 2 cents.
emm, gmailfs[1] and libgmail[2] are two different beasts? one allows you access your mail without the web interface, and the other does something slightly questionable (i personally think its a cool idea, but i haven't tried it.) i'm re-opening this (since it's assigned to python herd) and will get to it in time. my final justification is, if we're so concerned about being safe with certain terms-of-service, then why do we have gaim and gotmail? f.y.i: libgmail was put in portage on Sept. 16, (I see people are still discussing if we should put this in portage on the gentoo-dev list). gmailfs isn't in portage, but there is an ebuild here: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=63785
i see, i was looking at the wrong category. no wonder. then this should be closed. thanks Rob.
