The install docs aren't clear enough that the user MUST modify fstab or their system won't boot. The docs say to modify it but they should mention that the fstab that exists is an example generated by the installer and that if they want to boot their system and have their hdds mounted properly they need to modify it. A simple solution would be to change fstab to fstab.example and follow suite with how make.conf is at first make.conf.example and xorg.conf is xorg.conf.example and also how lilo.conf is lilo.conf.example. These file names along with a comment in the file header stress that the user MUST edit these files. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Install Gentoo, any stage 2. 3. Expected Results: A simple solution would be to change fstab to fstab.example and follow suite with how make.conf is at first make.conf.example and xorg.conf is xorg.conf.example and also how lilo.conf is lilo.conf.example. These file names along with a comment in the file header stress that the user MUST edit these files.
I've updated the GH to inform users that the default /etc/fstab file, provided by Gentoo, is not a valid one. Making an /etc/fstab.example file is no documentation bug; reassigning to base-system.
future versions of baselayout will handle this properly
erm, that is to say, at least version 1.11.0 already does
