Had the same and "jike" USE flag seems to be the problem. Successful merge with USE="-jike".
works fine for me, what jikes/ant version?
* dev-java/jikes Latest version available: 1.21 Latest version installed: 1.21 * dev-java/ant Latest version available: 1.6.2-r3 Latest version installed: 1.6.2-r3
I tried this several times again. The failure is consistent, and is _usually_ a lockup at the point indicated. On one occasion I got a signal 11 during the compile, which is generally a hardware error, probably a memory error. I wasn't able to repeat this. jikes must _really_ be stressing the hardware since this is a fast and reliable box, in service for close to a year, and this is the first time I've seen a signal 11 failure on it in the course of hundreds, if not thousands of gentoo ebuilds. Maybe this means something else in this context. Herve Coatanhay's solution, to avoid using jikes, works here, and the ebuild completes properly, however I should note that his solution has a typo in it. It should be 'USE="-jikes"' (with an 's') rather than 'USE="-jike"'.
Same Problem here with my Athlon-Notebook. Always reproducable

I was having the same problem. I modified my ebuild's src_compile section (/usr/portage/dev-java/rhino/rhino-1.5_rc5.ebuild), adding a -v flag to see if I could see where the problem was: src_compile() { local antflags="jar" use jikes && antflags="${antflags} -v -Dbuild.compiler=jikes" ant ${antflags} || die "compilation error" } To my surprise, this one change allowed the build to succeed. Maybe it's an ant problem? I'm running: Apache Ant version 1.6.2 compiled on September 12 2004 This is ant 1.6.2-r5, and my world update wants to install 1.6.2-r6 as the last package.
