Description Jan-Erik Skata 2017-06-01 06:47:34 UTC
After updating from 4.9 to 4.11.0 (.config copied and settings walked through), Plasma desktop freezes after the second time the computer is suspended. First time always OK.
After a few additional suspends, artifacts clutter the screen. Tried restarting xdm to log in again but Plasma freezes on the splash screen. Only a reboot fixes. Dmesg says nothing.
Panel, clock and desktop icons no longer work, although running Konsoles are functional.
Starting up with old 4.9 kernel resolves.

System is running on Nouveau (8800GT). Tried re-emerging xf86-video-nouveau to ensure new kernel-headers are used, did not help.

Comment 3 Jan-Erik Skata 2017-06-07 15:20:00 UTC
Updated to 4.11.3-gentoo and still the same problem.
Comment 4 Alice Ferrazzi Gentoo Infrastructure gentoo-dev 2017-06-07 15:22:18 UTC
I'm also using plasma and i didn't have such problem,
probably is graphic card related.
Comment 5 Jan-Erik Skata 2017-06-07 15:49:49 UTC
Tried opening upp "Display and Monitor" in systemsettings5 now with Plasma frozen systemsettings5 then freezes too. Says in konsole only:
kscreen.kcm: LOAD
kscreen.kcm: Activate output 97

Comment 7 Alice Ferrazzi Gentoo Infrastructure gentoo-dev 2017-06-09 15:22:40 UTC
not sure that Gentoo kernel bug is the right list for this problem,
looks to me more graphic card related.

dmesg says anything interesting ?
could you post your dmesg and .config

Thanks,
Alice

Tried to recompile kernel with gcc-5.4.0, still does the same.
Comment 11 Sven B. 2017-06-21 14:17:10 UTC
Got basically the same issue.
But using:
nvidia binary drivers + intel in offload configuration
as well as XFCE instead of KDE;

Tried to set Mesa rendering to classic instead of gallium, did not help.
Comment 13 Jan-Erik Skata 2017-07-05 14:05:54 UTC
Upgraded to 4.12.0-gentoo, problem persists.

Tried logging out of Plasma and suspending from text console, then it does not freeze and I can log in again. Should try create a new user and suspend from there.

With Lightdm running, that is.

In my case (Laptop) a freeze happens if an external screen is connected(DP) on resume.
If I detach the display prior to resuming; resume works without freezing. You might want test resuming without a screen attached; or if multiple try with only a single one.

But then again; might be an entirely different issue.

This is a desktop and I do have two displays.
Comment 18 Jan-Erik Skata 2017-07-09 09:50:26 UTC
Disconnected my secondary monitor and it still freezes.
Comment 19 Jan-Erik Skata 2017-09-17 09:05:58 UTC
It does seem this is resolved with 4.13.1 and current ~amd64.
Comment 20 Stefano 2017-10-07 19:15:25 UTC
I have the same odd behavior, let me know if I can help with any tests.

Jan-Erik Skata:
if 4.13.1 works, could you try to bisect the kernel?

Comment 22 Alice Ferrazzi Gentoo Infrastructure gentoo-dev 2017-12-09 19:49:27 UTC
4.11 is no more in the gentoo-sources and looks from the last message solved on 4.13.x

closing this as need info in one/two weeks, if there are no updates on the problem.
