Description Wilbur Pan 2004-08-27 11:45:44 UTC
If I am using gentoo-dev-sources, Gnome locks up on logout. I'm using Gnome 2.6.2 and xorg, and I use gdm as my login manager. This does not happen with mm-sources, which is what I ususally use.

This is what happens with gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.8-r3:

1. With xdm in my startup sequence, gdm and Gnome both start fine, but when I log out of the session, my screen goes blank and the keyboard dies on me. Only a hard reset gets me out of this.

2. Again with xdm in my startup sequence, if I immediately go to shut down or reboot the computer without logging in as a user, the computer does so without problems.

3. If I take xdm out of the startup sequence so that I start in console mode, and use startx to start Gnome, I can start and stop Gnome without any problems.

4. If I start in console mode, manually start /etc/init.d/xdm, and log in as a user, then my computer hangs on logout again.

My xorg log does not give me any error messages or hints as to what's going on.

I would love to hear any suggestions.

What does your kernel log say?

And does this also happen with a clean kernel.org kernel?

This does not happen with plain old development-sources or with mm-sources.

I've attached a log from my last attempt at using gentoo-dev-sources, starting from bootup until I log out of Gnome. FWIW, the "iid OAFIID:BrokenNoType:20000808" message shows up no matter what kernel I use.

And here's the message log with my last attempt at using gentoo-dev-sources.

I think I've narrowed down the problem. It has to do with the xircom_cb module. I'm using a Xircom RBEM-56G-100 Cardbus card.

If I load xircom_cb, my system hangs on logout as above.

If I have xircom_tulip_cb loaded instead, which is the older version of the Tulip driver, I can log in and out without hanging but I lose networking in the process.

It looks like my Gentoo system prefers to load xircom_tulip_cb at boot, as right now I have both drivers built as modules.

I think this still may be a gentoo-dev-sources problem, as if I use Knoppix 3.4 and boot with the Knoppix 2.6 kernel, xircom_cb gets loaded instead of xircom_tulip_cb and there are no problems with logging in and out or with shutdown.

Have you tried with the exact same .config on development-sources-2.6.8.1 ? I doubt this is a gentoo patchset issue, as we don't modify that driver as far as I can see.
Comment 6 Wilbur Pan 2004-09-06 19:52:23 UTC
Ack. I copied the .config file from my gentoo-dev-sources directory over to a clean install of 2.6.8.1, and I am getting the same lockup problem with xircom_cb.

I'm using a Xircom CardBus Ethernet 10/100/modem card -- RBEM56G-100. Before I mark this bug closed, where should I report this to?
