Description fkater 2017-05-12 13:52:45 UTC
This concerns the missing package for "imagescan" as well as iscan and
sane-backends. But read on:

It is still incredibly hard to get good support for scanners, especially with
automated document feeders (ADF) or duplex scan. So, you might find this
helpful:

- Be aware: Scanners reported "complete" on sane-project.org might not be.
Like here: hp5590 does not work with batch ADF correctly. And newer hardware
  is not tested by anyone.

- Epson has quite good support for Linux. Best Epson scanners are the DS
series. However: "Not tested" in sane device list. Hint given to try new
  "epsonds" driver.

- Gentoo's sane-backends ebuild is lacking "epsonds" USE flag (as well as the
more proprietary "epkowa"). Editing "epsonds" to the ebuild indeed creates
the library epsonds under /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-epsonds (!). I could not
test that without DS scanners yet, though.

- The sane driver "epkowa" is not installed via sane-backends but when
installing the scanner app "iscan" which is in portage. However, "iscan"
and "epkowa" are in fact outdated and replaced by Epson's "imagescan" app.

- "imagescan" is missing in portage. It can be downloaded from source (!)
  here: http://support.epson.net/linux/src/scanner/imagescanv3/
However, there seem to be WLAN or other network parts (?) being non-free.

- When installing imagescan you receive sane drivers (called again "imagescan"
at least unter Ubuntu) that work with sane's scanimage command. So, scanning
via sane it probably then possible. Pfew!

- Someone has tested Epson DS scanners and made an ebuild for it:
  https://github.com/utsushi/utsushi/issues/8

Don't know if "imagescan" license issues prevent ebuilds for it in portage.

Reproducible: Always

Thank you for the report.

> Scanners reported "complete" on sane-project.org might not be

please report on sane-project.org.

here is the link to the ebuild:
https://github.com/sirjaren/gentoo-overlay/tree/master/media-gfx/epson-ds

We need now a maintainer for this.

Please report one bug per issue:
- One bug per each new package needed/wanted to be added (if you want to maintain ebuilds for them, feel free to take a look to https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Proxy_Maintainers )
- One bug per sane-backends issue (it seems it's epsonds and epkowa support missing from them... if you know the needed ebuild changes, report them in that relevant bug reports)
- I don't know if epkowa support is wanted to packaging imagescan is preferred :/

Thanks
