You are just now switched from gcc-4.x to 5.4, right?
The error should be gone after rebuild of taglib (and may be some other deps).

See: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Upgrading_from_gcc-4.x_to_gcc-5.x

Closing the bug after confirmation...

I am not entirely sure when I switched. The info on the upgrade article didn't help me, the latest GCC was basically the only option. I did however start getting problems when I installed a cross-compiler (AVR). Whatever I try, emerge keeps prompting me to rebuild binutils-libs and always fails. I never filed a bug for this, but maybe it is related?

Some help or hints on what I can try would be much appreciated!

Since you are on stable amd64 KEYWORDS you probably have migrated less then a month before your original post here since it was stabilized on April 17. You may make it sure when you installed it with "qlop -l sys-devel/gcc". Also you should have manually switched to 5.4 with gcc-config.

The fact that you can't build binutils-libs sounds strange as well, I believe this is not a bug anyway but some issues on your system. Haven't you forgot to rebuild sys-devel/libtool after switching the gcc?

Unfortunately I can't offer more support beyond the wiki articles on gcc upgrade.

Okay, I rebuild everything and now it works. Sorry and thanks!
