emerge -pqv

After upgrading thunderbird from 45.8.0 to 52.1.0, depclean has unmerged media-libs/libcanberra and thunderbird does no longer play mail notification sound.

Please re-add runtime dependency on media-libs/libcanberra.

This is not a runtime dependency, the lib is dlopened if found. The simple solution is to simply emerge the package so you do not remove it.
