I've tried boost 1.58.0-r1, 1.62.0-r1, and 1.63.0. Blender segfaults during building (technically it's runtime, since it's running in the build system), with a never version of boost. This emerge -pqv is from me trying to upgrade, then disabling USE flags till I found the right combination and then recausing the bug for you. The same thing (segfault) would probably happen, even if the build system suceeded by not using blender, when I started it. Version 2.72 will be deleted soon. This is an old version and will take a lot of work to make it work with current versions of Boost.
