When I open many tabs (more than 2) in gnome-teminal, the background of new tabs often goes black. Selecting the area, swiching to another tab or switching virtual desktop makes it go away. This looks to me like some redraw function should be called when opening a new tab. The bug is appearently already known upstream at Gnome. http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=125364 http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=100420
Looks like it has been patched upstream. We'll see when it gets down here.
the patch should be added to a gentoo revision.

if you upgrade to the latest ~ version of the package in portage ( .11.12 ), does this solve your problem? According to the fedora bug, it seems to be resolved in > .11.11 Thanks!
I'm using vte-0.11.12 since very long ago, and the problem is always there... gnome-terminal is 2.10.0
Latest gnome-terminal is 2.10.0. Problem is still there.
Gad, Tor: As John said, the upstream patch for this is in vte since version 0.11.12. If you have installed a version of vte >= 0.11.12 and still see the problem, it might be a different issue (or the upstream patch needs more work). I can't reproduce it, so I'd like to ask you more details about this. If it's possible, please tell us how to reproduce it consistently (the original report says that new tabs "often" go black, so I guess it was not entirely deterministic).
For me now it works fine, but I remember that with vte-0.11.12 it didn't work. I don't know what fixed it, but it could be gcc4, or any related updated libs I suppose. Before it was compiled with gcc-3.3.5 ...
can the original reporter confirm either way that it does or does not work for him?
person reporting the same problem has said it has been fixed, no response from original reporter, marking as resolved.
