Description Robert Wohlrab 2004-08-24 16:58:17 UTC
When I try to start an OpenGL Application (glxgears) the XServer aborts with signal 11

I compiled x11-base/xorg-x11-6.7.99.902 ( -3dfx +3dnow -bitmap-fonts -cjk -debug -debug -dlloader -dmx -doc -insecure-drivers -ipv6 +mmx +nls +pam -sdk +sse -static ) with CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer". Ati-Drivers are Version 3.11.1 (on an ASUS Radeon 9600XT).

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge xorg-6.7.99.902 + ati-drivers-3.11.1
2. use fglrx in /etc/X11/xorg.conf + restart xdm/X
3. start an opengl app (glxgears)

Actual Results:
-- /var/log/Xorg.0.log --
Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting
--

Expected Results:

Same with 6.7.99.903. A Mail was send to ATI, but no response until now (ati support response id 977522). I hope that a solution will be found (or a new ati driver...) until the final xorg 6.8.0 is out.

There are also problem, when composite is enabled an xcompmgr started (corrupted window).
Comment 4 Robert Wohlrab 2004-09-01 05:59:00 UTC
Answer from ATI on freedesktop bugtraq: http://freedesktop.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1085#c4
Comment 5 Johannes Krause 2004-09-09 08:11:24 UTC
Same with 6.8.0. New ati-drivers are out (Version: 3.12.0), maybe they fix it.
Comment 6 Robert Wohlrab 2004-09-09 09:05:51 UTC
I tried it and had no luck. The driver 3.12.0 for XFree86 4.4 crashes the X.org 6.8 at start. The 3.12.0 for XFree86 4.3 kills the X.org when you start an opengl app.
Comment 7 Robert Wohlrab 2004-09-09 09:41:10 UTC
The Link to the version for XFree86 4.4 was removed on ati drivers page. Maybe there happens something and Gentoo can begin to switch to X.org 6.8
Comment 8 giggles1 2004-09-10 00:03:07 UTC
I don't understand though -- any opengl use crashes xorg on my ATI based system even if I switch from the ATI opengl libs to the xorg-x11 libs with opengl-update!
Comment 9 Nuno Araujo 2004-09-10 09:33:37 UTC
I don't use the ati-drivers package, but I have an ati radeon mobility m6 ly board, and the OpenGL applications also crash with the xorg-x11-6.8.0

I simply use the "native" drivers...

Sometimes it crashes after 10 seconds, some times after 1 minute
Comment 10 Tobias Klausmann (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-10 12:52:17 UTC
I've found that lacking this:

Section "DRI"
    Mode 0666
EndSection

makes it safe to use for non-root users as it effectively disables GL. A workaround, at best.

As soon as I add the above section, X11 dies directly after starting (with the mentioned sigsegv).

Versions are:
xorg-x11-6.8.0
ati-drivers-3.11.1
Comment 11 Luca Barbato gentoo-dev 2004-09-10 14:46:47 UTC
I'll pin the working xorg version for now

Comment 13 Duke 2004-10-12 12:01:17 UTC
This appears to be fixed with xorg-x11 6.8.0-r1 and ati-drivers 3.14.1.

It could be (or is probably) the ati-drivers that made the difference. fgl_glxgears ran fine :) And I can play Enemy Territory again, whee!

I'm using a Radeon 9600SE 128mb, btw.
Comment 14 Robert Wohlrab 2004-10-12 12:24:34 UTC
I got other informations and also got the same problems with 3.14.1

For more informations you can look at http://rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33782836 and http://rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33783834
Comment 15 Duke 2004-10-14 12:34:02 UTC
I take back comment #13. Something went awry with emerge and X.org was downgraded on my system to 6.7.

I'm using 6.8.0 now, and fgl_glxgears causes a hard lockup on my system. Before it just caused Xorg to crash.

Nice to see that Xorg 6.8 was unmasked before this problem was fixed, guys. Now half the programs I run crash X. >:-/
Comment 17 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-10-18 15:08:59 UTC
It's not a problem with xorg.

Repeat after me: It's not a problem with xorg.

Read the URL if you want some more info.

I'll leave this bug open until there's a working ati-drivers out.
Comment 18 trejkaz 2004-10-18 15:16:34 UTC
So why don't ati-drivers block xorg-x11-6.8.0? Wouldn't this be a temporary solution to prevent other people getting screwed over?

Comment 20 trejkaz 2004-10-18 16:23:53 UTC
What about ati-drivers-3.9.0-r1.ebuild? That version was the latest version they released which still has reasonable performance, and it doesn't look like _it_ blocks xorg-x11-6.8.0.
Comment 21 Don Seiler (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-10-25 13:39:49 UTC
Is there any news on the horizon about this problem? Is there an upstream bug we can follow with either ATI or x.org?
Comment 22 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-10-25 13:53:34 UTC
Don, look at the URL in the bug. =P All it'll do is tell you why it's broken, not when it'll be fixed, though. One would hope ATI's next driver release, whenever that may be, will be compatible with 6.8.
Comment 23 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-11-03 01:54:16 UTC
Closing, nothing we can do about it.
Comment 24 Don Seiler (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-11-09 15:03:30 UTC
Anyone know if newly-released ati-drivers 3.14.6 fixes the problem? The upstream bug said the issue was fixed in their CVS in October.
Comment 25 Robert Wohlrab 2004-11-10 01:16:32 UTC
mtippett said that this is not a major release ( http://www.rage3d.com/board/showpost.php?p=1333315554&postcount=16 ). It will only fix some doom3 errors and other minor problems. So this will not fix the xorg "bug". The big driver release will come later. If you want more informations you can join the ati linux driver chat on thursday ( http://rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?threadid=33790581 ).

Comment 28 Edward Bross 2005-04-14 07:44:03 UTC
Identical problem (any glx apps cause X to die with signal 11), only I'm using the NVIDIA driver, not the ATI driver.

kernel: ck-sources-2.6.10-r1
xorg-x11-6.8.2-r1
nvidia-kernel-1.0.6629-r4
nvidia-glx-1.0.6629-r1

I'll attach my xorg.conf, log file, and dmesg output below.

Is it safe to assume this is a problem with the nvidia driver?

I can definitly say, that your problem has nothing todo with the ati related one. The problem was that ati-drivers wasnt compatible with xorg-6.8.0. This was fixed (>=media-video/ati-drivers-8.8.25). The problem with nvidia must be a completly different, because it doesnt uses the same things (was it a dri problem?...dont know anymore) like ati and is normally fully compatible to xorg-x11. Please open a new bug for your problem, send a bug report to nvidia or better open a new thread ( http://forums.gentoo.org ).

This appears to fixed in modular at the very least.
Comment 33 Joshua Baergen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-11-20 11:35:21 UTC
Marking fixed.
