I have app-editors/emacs-vcs-26.0.9999 installed and cannot emerge
slime.

I get 
Compiler-macro error for cl--block-wrapper: (invalid-function ((symbol-value --cl-symbol-name--)))

In toplevel form:
contrib/slime-hyperdoc.el:22:1:Error: Invalid function: ((symbol-value --cl-symbol-name--))

I recently added an ebuild for slime-2.19 to bug 611780.  Can you verify if the issue still exists with that ebuild?

Can you test if this happens in =app-emacs/slime-2.20?

This version is in stabilization process (bug #652808)
