* going down the sideroute of the "ALSA soundcard matrix", I am instructed to do a $ modinfo soundcore on my system, it is not installed. I believe this is because I turned on "Sound card support" in the kernel itself, not as a module, but as a compile-in. * it would also be great if you wrote down at what point one should expect to see /dev/dsp or /dev/sound/dsp appearing. this would help users to stop and backtrack in case it has not yet appeared (i.e., something is wrong). this also goes for the dmesg log---at what point in an installation do I expect to see something in the log about my soundcard? Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce:
The ALSA Soundcard Matrix is needed to find out the name of the chipset and module; the rest of that document should most of the time be discarted. The devices in /dev come up when the appropriate kernel module is loaded. There is no real need to test for their absence as the next step (running amixer) will inform you if there is a problem anyway - so the testing is done on that level.
hi sven: that's great. can you drop these two sentences into the alsa docs, please? regards, /ivo
Will do
Voila, added information that the matrix is only needed to find out the module name.
