Description Tom Gall (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-08-21 14:37:06 UTC
Greetings.

While setting qmail and tcpserver following this bit of documentation:

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/home-router-howto.xml

the tcpserver would constantly fail out saying it couldn't figure out what smtp port was:

tcpserver: fatal: unable to figure out port number for smtp

yet if I start tcpserver by hand and avoid svscan entirely it works

I think /service + svscan etc etc isn't setup right. The upstream docs here appear to be correct:

the only reason it should give "tcpserver: fatal: unable to figure out port number for smtp" is that your /etc/services is borked go and check it.
perhaps you've changed nsswitch?
