I have just come to the end of my Gentoo Linux install with openmosix-sources and discovered that LVM2 is not included in the kernel. The howto does not seem to mention it anywhere, when it should infact be mentioned in the beginning before someone (me) goes through the whole install using LVM2, and all to no avail(?) I assume. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Followed handbook and LVM Howto 2. Emerged gentoo-sources 3. Configured kernel Actual Results: No LVM2 options available in kernel config Expected Results: LVM2 options as described in LVM Howto
I've added a paragraph that not all kernels provide LVM2 support. It already states that: """ When configuring your kernel, make sure to configure your kernel to support LVM2. Select the LVM2 module as follows: """ If you don't find this configuration directive you should immediately understand that the kernel does not support LVM2.
Thanks! The problem with the already-there paragraph is that when you've come to configuring the kernel you're basically finished installing. When you've spent MANY hours compiling on a pentium classic just to discover that everything is saved on an unusable partition....well it ain't fun;-) I'm sure there are many ways to solve this for an expert...but you get the point, I hope you put the paragraph in the beginning of the howto.
I've added "Not all 2.4 kernels provided by Gentoo support LVM2" in the beginning of the document.
