emerge --info please. Also, I'm assuming you are on a non-desktop profile. At that point, you are responsible for enabling X globally.

Created attachment 466460 [details] emerge --info Here's emerge --info. The machine is on a non-desktop profile because it's not a desktop; it's a server. Similarly, it doesn't have a global USE=X because it's not running X (no monitor connected). I have one or two graphical programs I wish to use through X forwarding, which is what triggered this case.
I would have strongly agreed before, but now as we are in a wayland world, I'm not so sure anymore... though given still a big need for Xwayland, I guess it still makes sense for a couple years.
