>=sys-fs/fuse-3.0.0 installs a 'fuse3.pc' rather than 'fuse.pc', the ntfs3g configure check fails to detect this.

sys-fs/ntfs3g-2016.2.22-r2:20170209-091224.log (patched configure)

There are also source-level incompatibilities, so just patching configure (or configure.ac) is not sufficient.
Comment 4 Patrick McLean gentoo-dev 2017-02-10 19:32:45 UTC
Added <sys-fs/fuse-3.0.0_pre to external-fuse USE flag until upstream ports to the new fuse.
Comment 5 jospezial 2017-04-22 13:52:23 UTC
I removed the blocker in my sys-fs/ntfs3g-2017.3.23.ebuild.
It showed the same configure error.
As you can see the name of and in the pkgconfig file has changed.

cat /usr/lib64/pkgconfig/fuse.pc
prefix=/usr
exec_prefix=${prefix}
libdir=/usr/lib64
includedir=${prefix}/include

Name: fuse
Description: Filesystem in Userspace
Version: 2.9.7
Libs: -L${libdir} -lfuse -pthread
Libs.private: -ldl
Cflags: -I${includedir}/fuse -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64

cat /usr/lib64/pkgconfig/fuse3.pc
prefix=/usr
libdir=${prefix}/lib64
includedir=${prefix}/include

Name: fuse3
Description: Filesystem in Userspace
Version: 3.1.0
Libs: -L${libdir} -lfuse3 -lpthread
Libs.private: -ldl
Cflags: -I${includedir}/fuse3

With sys-fs/fuse-3.0.1::poly-c installed
/usr/bin/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-pkg-config --exists --print-errors "fuse >= 2.6.0"
throws the error but no error with
/usr/bin/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-pkg-config --exists --print-errors "fuse3 >= 2.6.0"

I will change the configure too to see if sys-fs/ntfs3g-2017.3.23 compiles against sys-fs/fuse-3.0.1.

fuse3.patch

(In reply to jospezial from comment #5)

> I will change the configure too to see if sys-fs/ntfs3g-2017.3.23 compiles
> against sys-fs/fuse-3.0.1.

then I got in compile phase:
"error only API version 30 or greater is supported"

This is because of DFUSE_USE_VERSION=26 in
/var/tmp/portage/sys-fs/ntfs3g-2017.3.23/work/ntfs-3g_ntfsprogs-2017.3.23/src/Makefile.in
and
/var/tmp/portage/sys-fs/ntfs3g-2017.3.23/work/ntfs-3g_ntfsprogs-2017.3.23/src/Makefile.am

I changed that to
DFUSE_USE_VERSION=30
Comment 7 jospezial 2017-04-22 15:55:14 UTC
It seems to be really API incompatible:

There are some more packages that fail against fuse3 .
on my system:
sys-fs/ntfs3g-2017.3.23
sys-fs/e2fsprogs-1.43.4
net-fs/sshfs-2.9
sys-boot/grub-2.02_rc2::poly-c USE="mount"

No problems to rebuild gnome-base/gvfs-1.30.4.

I think we need to open bugreports for these and open a trackerbug for packages with fuse3 problems.

Closing as this appears to be fixed by 2017.3.23-r1 which is now stable and uses a slotted fuse dep and 2016.2.22-r2 should probably be dropped from the tree.
