Description groepaz 2004-08-18 18:09:22 UTC
when i switch from X to the framebuffer console (virtual terminals) a few bottom lines arent cleared and contain garbage. g4/15" powerbook here, radeon9600mobile. happens with kernel 2.6.7-r11 and 2.6.8-r1.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. start X windows
2. press ctrl-alt-f1 to switch to a virtual console
3. (eventually switch back and forth if you had luck and the problem is not visible ;))

Expected Results:
clear the bottom scanlines instead of not touching them at all.

What driver are you using? radeonfb? Does it happen with the latest development-sources? If it does, you should probably report it on http://bugzilla.kernel.org/
Comment 2 groepaz 2004-08-21 16:37:43 UTC
radeonfb, yes. didnt try the latest development kernel....and honest, i'm not planning to do so either, i wasted enough time on compiling and fixing stuff already :=P also, arent you guys forwarding reported stuff to upstream (ie, kernel.org in this case) ?
Comment 3 Michal Januszewski (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-08-22 01:06:52 UTC
Well, if you want this thing fixed - you should try it. I know recompiling one kernel after another can be a real pain in the arse, especially if it doesn't fix anything ;) But the thing is - the bug must be confirmed on the latest dev-sources. Otherwise, the guys at kernel.org will tell us "you broke it with your Gentoo patchset" or "try the latest vanilla kernel and see if it's fixed". And no, we don't relay things to kernel.org. It is very likely that the fbdev people will need more information about this issue. Asking for them here and then realying it to kernel.org would be a waste of time for everyone.

As Michal said, we do really need you to confirm on a clean kernel and report it to them. If it turns out that the bug is only reproducable with our patchset applied, then please reopen this bug.

i have tried this with a vanilla 2.6.8.1 and the bug is still visible...however the 2.6.8 kernels run very unstable for me (occasional crashes/hard lockups every now and then) and 2.6.9 is masked for the same reason - i'll wait for the next updated kernel which is supposed to work on ppc and check for this problem again.
