As most of us are not on 2.4 kernels we can disable CONFIG_FEATURE_2_4_MODULES and compile.

May be we can add a new USE variable with env/make.conf support for this? Its a generic enough question: which kernels do you want your gentoo to support if some pkg needs to know?

I imagine ~amd64 users cleave almost perfectly into two distinct categories: those for whom attempting this work-around or first-pass-solution would be a pretty obvious idea, and those for whom it would be a fairly obscure idea. I suspect I was in the latter category, so, even if this observation is only the first step in a full bugfix, thanks for sharing it here explicitly!

Comment 8 Anthony Basile gentoo-dev 2017-01-30 15:33:46 UTC
The problem is USE=static on glibc only. For now, we can just build with USE=-static until I figure out how to fix the build system.
Comment 9 Bluey The Dog 2017-02-01 04:35:07 UTC
Anthony's short term fix, comment 8, worked for me. Although I would suggest the wording could be slightly better. Upon first reading I thought the USE change applied to glibc.

In package.use I used:

     sys-apps/busybox -static

and all was good.

Don't forget to remove this workaround when this bug gets fixed. Busybox is statically linked by default to give you an emergency tool in case your dynamic linker or glibc shared libraries get botched.

i've just dropped linux-2.4 support. if anyone shows up who cares, they can file a new bug, and we'll figure out a better way then.
