device-mapper is now a dependency of os-prober starting in version 1.72 because of the following bug:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=788062
Comment 3 Skander Morgenthaler 2017-01-29 17:13:22 UTC
Unfortunately being able to detect my windows partition seems to require quite a lot now. It is not enough to:
- reemerging grub with USE="device-mapper",
- adding lvm to boot runlevel
- rebooting

os-prober then terminates with the following error(s):
balar ~ # LANG="C" os-prober
/dev/mapper/control: open failed: No such device
Failure to communicate with kernel device-mapper driver.
Check that device-mapper is available in the kernel.

If there is a required kernel option required, I could not find it and it was not pointed out by lvm2. I looked at "Enable the block layer", "File Systems", "Virtualization", "Device Drivers -> Block Devices" and also had a quick scan within "Device Drivers" in general.

If device-mapper needs to be configured for it to work, I could not find any easy to understand manual (meaning, after 30 Minutes of reading I was still completely clueless on what to do).

So, for a bugfix that seems to be a lot of hassle, even if that bug was really bad.
Comment 4 blopsalot 2017-01-29 21:49:07 UTC
the upstream bug fixed had to do with vhosts on lvm2, so if you're not using lvm2, just stay on 1.71.

since the corruption involves lvm2, i'm not sure why it is not safe for 50mounted-tests to check for dm_setup, if it's there use it, if not skip it.

Here's what you were looking for though

Device Drivers
    Multi-device support (RAID and LVM)
[*] Multiple devices driver support (RAID and LVM)
        [*] Device mapper support

According to comment 66 of the debian bug report linked above, it might very well be that "simple" non lvm2 layouts with extended partitions may be affected as well. Though I just noted, I do not have msdos style extended partitions anymore right now.

While it may be the case that I am safe right now, I will most likely have to update sometime in the future anyway.

Thanks, will try that option.

That's a generic message when it tries UFS (Universal Flash Storage)....(In reply to Skander Morgenthaler from comment #5)

"Comment 66" is a guy ranting and raving about a generic warning upon trying UFS (Universal Flash Storage). The bug had absolutely no application to him whatsoever.

emerge lvm2 with device-mapper-only is the workaround if you don't want to mask.

Thanks again, that did the trick. os-prober is now working as expected (at least for me) and without further configuration of device-mapper. Unsurprisingly, it works nicely without the device-mapper-only useflag of sys-fs/lvm2. I have not used that useflag due to the warning of it being unsupported.

So, in terms of this current "bug", maybe appending/updating the elog message of sys-boot/os-prober and (if needed) an added dependancy check would be nice, and probably also adding an kernel option check in the sys-fs/lvm2 ebuild about needed/suggested kernel option - including an appropriate message if the kernel option is missing.

yes, it works because you installed lvm2 in it's entirety, (In reply to Skander Morgenthaler from comment #7)

oh sorry, I should have clarified, device-mapper-only is optional, of course you can install full blown lvm2 and it'll work. too much bloat for me in this use case though, i'll take "unsupported". ;)
Comment 9 André Terpstra 2017-01-30 12:00:18 UTC
I have the same problem and reverted to 1.71. In my case, I don't use RAID/LVM/device-mapper. Apparently something else is wrong.
Comment 10 Lars Lindley 2017-02-03 08:39:47 UTC
I have the same issue with 1.73.
Windows 10 resides on its own ssd disk, no extended partitions.
LVM not installed.
1.71 works as expected.
Comment 11 d-7 2017-02-26 15:20:44 UTC
I have the same problem. But, if mount windows partition before updating grub configuration, then windows partition will be detected correctly.
Comment 12 Vasco Gervasi 2017-10-14 07:32:19 UTC
I have the same problem.
As suggested by d-7, once I mount the reserved windows partition, works as expected.
Comment 13 Mark Nowiasz 2017-10-23 07:54:59 UTC
I've got a similar problem - 1.74 works fine (and detects Window's boot partion), whereas 1.76 fails to do so.
Comment 14 Sergey Ilinykh 2017-11-24 06:56:21 UTC
Thanks for the solution.

I masked 1.76 for awhile till a real solution is found.
Comment 15 Michael Perlov 2017-12-21 23:27:54 UTC
This is because removal of device mapper code from os-prober:
https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/d-i/os-prober.git/commit/?id=b760c18ffec7be583efbb2dfc6cbc56dd0a8ca5b

grub-mount should be used instead:

USE=mount emerge grub
Comment 16 Sander Sweers 2017-12-22 20:44:55 UTC
(In reply to Michael Perlov from comment #15)
> grub-mount should be used instead:
>
> USE=mount emerge grub

So in the current state os-prober is broken as without grub-mount it will not detect any other operating systems.

I propose adding grub with mount use flag to RDEPEND,
