OK, I see where the problem is: docker 1.12.6 is not compatible with containerd-9999 (Git master). In short, the master branch of containerd doesn't have the -l (--listen) option that Docker is trying to use; it's been renamed to -s (--socket). I traced it back as well as I could, but the main.go file got moved around and I'm not so hot with Git. But here are the two relevant versions of main.go, demonstrating the flag change: https://github.com/docker/containerd/blob/v0.2.x/containerd/main.go#L54 https://github.com/docker/containerd/blob/c08e0e610cb110d174027814846e6e862280aabe/cmd/containerd/main.go#L65 To clarify, that second link shows the new -s (--socket) flag, but that commit is not when the flag change took place; I couldn't identify THAT commit. As shown in the following link, Docker 1.12.x uses the -l (--listen) flag when calling containerd: https://github.com/docker/docker/blob/1.12.x/libcontainerd/remote_linux.go#L370 Hence, Docker 1.12.6 needs containerd-0.2, and is not compatible with containerd-9999.
