Description Tom 2017-01-23 18:36:53 UTC
While upgrading file from v5.25 to v5.29, since the latter holds my vacuum-cleaner entry, I've noticed that the command "man magic" displayed the old version from the v5.22 package.

The old 5.22 installed it under man section 4, which was wrong and has been corrected in 5.25, installing it under man section 5.

I've found the old section 4 magic man page under man's page cache directory...

I guess the only way to omit such problems would be to delete possible cached man pages while installing newer packages - or at least for those man pages changing their section entries.

Cheers Tom

The cached "catman pages" are maintained outside of portage by the man page rendering software. There's no reasonable way for random ebuilds to clear them out.

The systemd unit for the man-db package runs the following command to clear out old catman pages periodically. Perhaps the cron.daily file should be updated to do the same.

# Expunge old catman pages which have not been read in a week.
ExecStart=/usr/bin/find /var/cache/man -type f -name *.gz -atime +6 -delete
