Description ivo welch 2004-08-16 15:44:12 UTC
I am experienced at mandrake, but new at gentoo. towards the end of the installation, I follow instructions to issue a

$ emerge grub

now, I get tons of masked entries, with very little information as to what this means, why it is masked, how I can or should correct it, and if so, which version I should choose. the same happens for lilo. it will be tough to boot gentoo without a boot loader, so this is a showstopper.

eventually, I figured out that "emerge grub-static" got me something...but grub-static fails to put all the stage? files into the right spot. It gets worse from there, because grub-install then complains about all sorts of other issues, and seems to work if I do not mount /boot/ on another partition---though it still complains that it cannot find the drive in the bios (even though it maybe works).

for novices, we need much better guidance at this installation stage---and preferably a lilo or grub that works without trouble.

regards,

/iaw

This is detailed already in the docs. Please read the AMD64 technotes in their entirity before attempting to install on AMD64 - or, if you don't, then please don't complain when it breaks.
