Emerge isnt handling this very gracefully, but-- it's nvidia-settings which conflicts with your existing nvidia-drivers[tools]. vtk claims to need nvidia-settings, but the actual dep in the ebuild reads: video_cards_nvidia? ( || ( x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers[tools,static-libs] media-video/nvidia-settings ) ) So it looks like if your nvidia-drivers has USE="tools static-libs" then it shouldn't pull nvidia-settings anymore.
