This is your hardware specific problem, not pine. Check: 1. Faulty memory. Run memtest86 from Gentoo liveCD. 2. Check that you have enough memory. 3. Check for overheating etc.,
How much physical RAM and swap space do you have on that system? During compilation of filter.c the compiler filled up all of my 512MB RAM and half of my 512MB swap space. The compiling of that single (!) file lasted for about 2-3 minutes.
