The system locks up in a way I've never seen before; it's almost as if I had a kernel panic, except I receive no notification of the panic. I can start the system and run the system for anywhere from 10 minutes to 45 minutes to, often times, a few hours. I've noticed that the system becomes stable if I unload "emu10k1". Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. emerge =sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.4.26-r5 2. load the kernel 3. emerge emu10k1 4. load the new emu10k1 module 5. leave computer on... Actual Results: my screensaver initialized and worked, I left the computer for about an hour and came back and nothing on the screen moved. I attempted to switch consoles to no avail. I attempted to ssh into the system, but the system didn't respond to the network at all, not even to ping. It also freezes if the xserver isn't loaded. Expected Results: it shouldn't have frozen Portage 2.0.50-r9 (default-x86-1.4, gcc-3.3.3, glibc-2.3.3.20040420-r0, 2.4.26-gentoo-r5) ================================================================= System uname: 2.4.26-gentoo-r5 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2700+ Gentoo Base System version 1.4.16 Autoconf: sys-devel/autoconf-2.59-r3 Automake: sys-devel/automake-1.8.3 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=athlon-xp -pipe" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" COMPILER="gcc3" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.1/share/config /usr/kde/3.2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=athlon-xp -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs ccache sandbox" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://mirror.tucdemonic.org/gentoo/ http://gentoo.ccccom.com http://mirrors.tds.net/gentoo http://open-systems.ufl.edu/mirrors/gentoo" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="" SYNC="rsync://earthman/gentoo-portage" USE="X aalib alsa apm arts avi berkdb bonobo cdr crypt cups directfb encode esd foomaticdb gdbm gif gnome gpm gtk gtk2 gtkhtml imlib java jpeg kde ldap libg++ libwww mad mikmod motif mozilla mpeg ncurses nls oggvorbis opengl oss pam pdflib perl png python qt quicktime readline sdl slang spell ssl svga tcltk tcpd truetype x86 xml2 xmms xv zlib"
I just reproduced the bug without emu10k1 loaded, although I think the problem might be "soundcore". I loaded my alsa snd-intel8x0 driver for my soundstorm integrated board and started up a program called "Stepmania", which failed to use the device, and ended up causing a (visible) kernel panic. This time, I was aware that it was a kernel panic because I saw the flashing keyboard lights. I will comment again if I can reproduce this every time.
I can reproduce the bug only by being logged in through GDM, I haven't tested it with another window manager under GDM, however. Basically, I can start an X server from root, start a terminal, begin running stepmania, and it won't kernel panic at the end; I can start an X server, start a terminal, and start an instance of Openbox (my WM) and start Stepmania and it won't kernel panic at exit. However, if I am logged in through GDM and running Openbox, the kernel panicks after the exit of Stepmania.
could you provide the output from the kernel panic? You mention that this freeze also occurs if the xserver is not loaded, however in your various scenarios you mention you seem to be running from X. Is it also true that this only happens with the 'Stepmania' application?
It's very confusing, I know. I've experienced the same kernel panic at the terminal, when the sound drivers are loaded, in X, when the sound drivers are loaded (xfree86 and xorg both), and it is reproducible after I exit the stepmania application every time I exit it. I can find absolutely no output from the kernel panic, but I know that it happened. The system just locks up and produces no output, no response from keys except the reset button, and sometimes displays the telltale flashing keyboard lights. It happens even when I'm not running the Stepmania application, but it seems to be reproducible every time I use it (at exit), possibly due to the way it manages sound resources.
I don't think it's emu10k1 anymore. I've played around and discovered that even after unloading emu10k1 the computer still locks up. However, I have had soundcore removed and the computer has been fairly stable for almost a week now.
definitely the sound driver. After keeping the computer on for days, I loaded the sound driver and began running an application. After approximately 5 minutes of running the application, it froze completely without warning.
Can you try using the alsa-drivers instead of the 'emu10k1' drivers? What about the in-kernel emu10k1 OSS driver?
Please reopen bug with requested info, if issue still exists. Thanks
