When I view sites with a lot of images in Firefox, the system freezes. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Open Firefox 2. Go to kde-look.org or dilbert.com 3. Click on a few links Actual Results: system freezes Expected Results: page loads, no system freeze The problem occurs with Firefox 0.9.3 and kernels 2.6.7-gentoo-r13 and 2.6.8-rc4 emerge info: Gentoo Base System version 1.4.16 Portage 2.0.50-r9 (default-amd64-2004.2, gcc-3.3.3, glibc-2.3.4.20040619-r1, 2.6.8-rc4a) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.8-rc4a x86_64 12 Autoconf: sys-devel/autoconf-2.59-r3 Automake: sys-devel/automake-1.8.3 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-march=athlon64 -pipe -O2" CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" COMPILER="gcc3" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/share/config /usr/share/texmf/dvipdfm/config/ /usr/share/texmf/dvips/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/platex/config/ /usr/share/texmf/xdvi/ /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-march=athlon64 -pipe -O2" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs ccache" GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp:///ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/gentoo/ http://mirrors.tds.net/gentoo http://mirror.datapipe.net/gentoo http://gentoo.chem.wisc.edu/gentoo/" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="X alsa amd64 apm avi berkdb crypt emacs encode foomaticdb gdbm gif gpm gtk2 imlib jpeg kde libg++ libwww mikmod motif mpeg ncurses nls nogcj oggvorbis opengl pam pdflib perl png python qt quicktime readline sdl slang spell ssl tcpd tetex truetype xml2 xmms xv zlib"
Still a problem? Is it just X freezing? Can you ping the machine from another host when it's "frozen"?
.
I've been away at school since September and haven't been able to update anything since then. In about two weeks I'll have a chance to try the updates. When the problem occurred X, sshd, and the capslock light all stopped responding.
the bug still occurs with firefox 1.0_pre-r2 and gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.9-r4
I had the system freeze once while I was not using Firefox. The freeze occurred when I closed the "Configure Konqueror" dialog. In addition to konqueror, I was running xfce, xfterm, ssh, emerge, xmms, and a simple gtk application.
I was able to reproduce the bug and fix it, by downgrading freetype from 2.1.9 to 2.1.5 on firefox 1.0 and 1.0-r3, but a friend of mine reports, that he has never experienced the aforementioned bug, although he uses firefox 1.0-r3 and freetype 2.1.9
I have been using freetype-2.1.5-r1.
Works fine for me on -r3 with freetype-2.1.5-r1 (which is the stable freetype).
I installed Kubuntu and the system still freezes, so it's not just a Gentoo problem. I'll try installing FreeBSD to see if it is a hardware problem.
It appears that the freeze is caused by the sis video driver. Switching to vesa seems to have fixed the problem. https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3505
