Please try moving /usr/local/bin and /usr/local/sbin to the end of your PATH, so that it would hopefully try to compile it with gcc instead of mpicc, mpicxx and mpif77.

Hm, on my system it looks like this: # which mpicc mpicxx mpif77 ; ls -l /usr/local/*bin/mpi* /usr/bin/mpicc /usr/bin/mpicxx /usr/bin/mpif77 ls: cannot access '/usr/local/*bin/mpi*': No such file or directory but i'll give it a try and report back.

What about 5.2.0?
This was due to an (likely accidental) environment variable setting. In the config.log posted, you can see F77=mpif77, which is later used... configure:28521: mpif77 -c -O2 -pipe conftest.f >&5 ./configure: line 3949: mpif77: command not found configure:28521: $? = 127 configure: failed program was: | subroutine foobar() | return | end | subroutine foo_bar() | return | end configure:28654: error: in `/var/tmp/portage/sci-mathematics/...: configure:28656: error: cannot compile a simple Fortran program So after 5+ years, I'm sorry to say that this is was easily fixable by not overriding the fortran compiler.
