can you try building with binutils-2.26 ? i'd note again that you seem to be building an unkeyworded version of glibc using a stable system.
(In reply to SpanKY from comment #10) you mean downgrading binutils ? Because this is an unstable system from the attached emerge.info : hardened-no-multilib-libressl-unstable_20161218-164649
(In reply to Toralf Förster from comment #11) mmm, what now ? your summary in comment #0 says binutils-2.25.1+gcc-4.9.4. your attached "emerge-info.txt" says binutils-2.25.1 too, although now it says gcc-5.4.0.
I'm wondering too: The origin bug report was made at 17th, but lacks all data, and 1 day later I attached onto this bug report data from another image - what a BS - made by me. I'll close this bug report - too confusing for devs - and will create a better bug report next time when I repdroduced the issue.

Created attachment 462558 [details, diff] Dont use PLT or GOT in static archives I was able to successfully merge after applying patch. I am looking down the barrel of a segfault on hardened tho in libc which is most likely caused from -DPIC being passed during compile
this fix is in glibc-2.25. Toralf: if you can verify this fixes things for you w/glibc-2.24, i can backport it to the glibc-2.24 branch.
(In reply to SpanKY from comment #17) confirmed - patch helps, tested at the affected image.
(In reply to Toralf Förster from comment #18) thanks. this is fixed in glibc-2.24-r1 then.
