Description peter@prh.myzen.co.uk 2016-12-14 09:42:14 UTC
sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-4.9.0 does not boot with my AMD/ATI Tonga display card. The screen goes blank as expected, but remains blank with no disk activity.

Versions 4.8.14 and earlier are fine.

Reproducible: Always

Actual Results:
Unresponsive system. No screen, no keyboard, no disk activity.

I unset CONFIG_DRM_AMDGPU_SI to test whether the default Y was causing the problem, but it made no difference.

I see you say it did not boot, not to insult, are you absolutely sure?
Did you try to ssh into it from another box?

I don't have ssh set up for that on this box at the moment. But if it had booted, when I then pressed the Reset button and booted a different kernel, I'd have seen fsck messages about checking all the partitions, they having been disconnected abruptly. I didn't; they were all clean. Moreover, I'd have seen the disk activity indicator flashing, but I didn't.

I'll try a couple more tests.

Well! Either it's changed its behaviour or, more likely, I managed to confuse myself the first time.

I set up ssh so that I could log in from another box, then booted this box into 4.9.0 and watched for disk activity. There was plenty. I also got the usual brief flash as (I assume) the display driver connected the card to the monitor, but after that the monitor couldn't find any signal to sync with. On ssh'ing in from another box I rebooted into 4.8.14 and everything is working as expected.

Note: Before changing the kernel I booted I did remember to emerge @module-rebuild @x11-module-rebuild.

So, apologies for misleading you; it seems it's just the ATI/AMD code that's bad. I'm glad you checked, Mike - thanks.

I added amdgpu/tonga_k_smc.bin to CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE in .config and rebuilt, and it now works. Its now set to;

CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE="amdgpu/tonga_ce.bin amdgpu/tonga_mec2.bin amdgpu/tonga_rlc.bin amdgpu/tonga_smc.bin amdgpu/tonga_mc.bin amdgpu/tonga_mec.bin amdgpu/tonga_sdma1.bin amdgpu/tonga_uvd.bin amdgpu/tonga_me.bin amdgpu/tonga_pfp.bin amdgpu/tonga_sdma.bin amdgpu/tonga_vce.bin amdgpu/tonga_k_smc.bin"

Great news, glad you found the issue.

Not so fast:

No rule to make target '/lib/firmware/amdgpu/tonga_k_smc.bi', needed by 'firmware/amdgpu/tonga_k_smc.bi.gen.o

That amdgpu microcode would have to come from sys-firmware/amdgpu-ucode, where all the other microcode comes from, but it isn't in there.

I thought I was also using sys-kernel/linux-firmware-20161205, but it seems it isn't installed here. It shouldn't have anything to do with AMD GPU firmware unless things have changed. I can't remerge linux-firmware because portage has made a blocker of it, or I'd be able to offer more detail.

The problem has not been fixed.

Ahem!

I see that, indeed, things have changed. I did what should have been obvious and removed amdgpu-ucode, installed linux-firmware and the system is now happy.

I withdraw my previous remarks.
