Description Marius Mauch (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-08-12 14:44:35 UTC
It's getting annoying to check half a dozen docs for errors, misconceptions, deprecated information and unclear information about portage. Right now there are 4 overlapping chapters in the handbook and the portage manual. I'd really like to see all of them get merged into one portage handbook.
Comment 1 Sven Vermeulen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-08-13 07:00:42 UTC
We need to get all portage-specifics in the Gentoo Handbook. It's true that it's covered in separate chapters but I don't think they are overlapping. Using a Portage Handbook is overkill.

Well, I'd eventually like to include the ebuild documentation (from the dev-handbook) there as well.
Comment 3 Xavier Neys (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-08-26 02:45:50 UTC
Including the ebuild documentation from the dev-HB is not a good idea IMHO.
The Gentoo-HB and the dev-HB target two different audiences.
The former is for users, the latter for devs.

I've added SLOT and depclean to the Gentoo Handbook. This should normally complete the integration of the Portage Manual in the Gentoo Handbook. I'll leave the portage manual for a couple of days (same for this bug) so we can track any difficulties or things I've missed.

I'll go over the Portage Manual once again and see if everything is available in the second part of the Gentoo Handbook. If it is, I'll mark the portage-manual as "obsolete" (change links in doc/en, put a <warn> on top of portage-manual and eventually move it up to the Attic).

However, I must admit that Portage is largely undocumented (there are many aspects of Portage that are unknown to the public or only available through the manpages) so I'm still checking out how to have this situation turned over.
Comment 5 Sven Vermeulen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-08-29 03:16:27 UTC
Steps completed: the doc index now references the GH entirely. portage-manual is kept for historic reasons until it's outdated.
