As in summary. 2.7.x and 2.6 does not print such warning
both emacs-24 and emacs-25 tried.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. update to 2.8.0
2. go to git repository
3. run emcs and M-x magit-status
Actual Results:  
Cannot determine Magit’s version (error "/usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/magit/magit.el" repo static elpa)

Thanks for the report. This is now fixed in magit 2.9.0.
