Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

So, I don't know if the unresolved symbols are the problem, although they do not show up in a long where 3.9.0-r1 starts properly. No other errors (EE) are reported in the log. It's not a stale kernel module needing to be unloaded. I've never had any troubles with the ATI drivers before this, 3.9.0-r1 was (and still is) fine. Any ideas?

Reproducible: Always

add the full X log please

try using a fresh configuration from fglrxconfig and report back

thanks
Comment 5 Andreas Sundebo 2004-08-12 06:52:23 UTC
The unresolved symbols can be fixed by adding the following 4 lines to the Section "Module" in the xorg.conf file:

# This loads modules required to resolve symbols needed by the fglrx module
    Load "fb"
    Load "xaa"
    Load "fglrxdrm"

However, the X server still won't start, and the log file shows no errors (EE).

3.9.0-r1 Xorg.0.log

I'll add my working 3.9.0 log. My emerge xorg-x11 -pv looks identical, and I
think my broken log is the same too... no errors apart from the unresolved
symbols.
Comment 9 Gustavo Ribeiro Alves 2004-08-17 19:58:42 UTC
There must be something seriously wrong with xorg and/or ati-drivers ebuilds.

I had my system working with drivers 3.2.8 and 3.9.0. Just did a reformat and I'm getting exactly this error.

Commenting out the Load "glx" option on xorg.conf makes the X server load, but provides no glx accel (obviously).
Comment 10 Gustavo Ribeiro Alves 2004-08-17 20:43:21 UTC
Don't ask me why. But adding a Load "xtt" to my xorg.conf solved the problem.
Comment 11 giggles1 2004-08-18 00:04:21 UTC
Alas, I already have/had xtt loading.
Comment 12 Gustavo Ribeiro Alves 2004-08-18 08:52:53 UTC
I also had to move glx and dri to the end of the load list.

This is the corresponging section of my xorg.conf:

Section "Module"
        Load "freetype"
        Load "xtt"
# Load "extmod"
        Load "dbe"
        Load "record"
        Load "xtrap"
        Load "type1"
        Load "speedo"
        Load "dri"
        Load "glx"
EndSection
Comment 13 giggles1 2004-08-19 16:58:55 UTC
Rearranging does not help, alas. This problem also persists with xorg-CVS ans 2.6.8-r1
Comment 14 Luca Barbato gentoo-dev 2004-10-21 00:52:45 UTC
try using the latest ati-drivers with the xorg-6.7.0 and rewrite your configuration, that way must work.

could you check you kernel configuration and make sure you don't have the radeon dri built in?
Comment 15 giggles1 2004-10-21 09:38:44 UTC
Things have been working with newer ATI drivers and xorg 6.8.0 (with /dev/drm perms restricted) for some time now. I guess I'll close this as fixed (upgrade to new version).
Comment 16 Luca Barbato gentoo-dev 2004-10-21 11:50:34 UTC
Closing it then, you should use xorg-6.7.0-r2 if you want the 3d support (given it is working now)
