I could not get the version in portage to run. About 80% of the plugins would segfault somewhere in lilv. I turns out that current git does not have any of these issues and seems much more stable. Would it possible to bring this into portage, by any chance?

PR to version bump to 1.10.16, which was tagged on 04.01.2016, has just been merged, see https://github.com/gentoo/gentoo/pull/4210.
There's only 4 commits missing compared to master, which don't seem to be relevant for the stability issues you're seeing.
