binutils-config allows the default linker to be set (ld.bfd or ld.gold) but does not have an option to display which linker is currently configured. The list and show sub-commands only show the binutils version.

just run `ld --version` to find out

I've removed support for overriding linker from binutils-config in bug #658054.
