Tue Aug 10 21:25:39 CEST 2004 I am installing gentoo from livecd install-x86-universal-2004.2 At section 6.a (Optional) of the guide, the command: mirrorselect -a -s4 -o | grep -ve '^Netselect' >> /mnt/etc/make/gentoo.conf splurges 7.5 KB of html from gd.tuwein.ac.at into the file, followed by 100 KB of null characters, followed by the "GENTOO_MIRRORS=" line (tacked onto the end of the NULs). It did this both times I tried it. Having edited the rubbish out, the installation continues ok. Workaround: remove gd.tuwein.ac.at from the list of mirror candidates I have also mailed Antonin.Sprintzl@tuwein.ac.at about this - his email is mentioned in the HTML source that mirrorselect outputs. A copy of the output from "mirrorselect" is available at http://freaknet.org/martin/gentoo-tuwein-rubbish Just the html portion of this is available at http://freaknet.org/martin/gentoo-tuwein-rubbish.html All the best Martin Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
Obligatory "me too". If the output helps any, it's in my forum post: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=1438761#1438761
This is a mirrorselect bug. Not sure who maintains mirrorselect these days, so kicking back to bug-wranglers.

I am unable to recreate this problem. please test with 0.85 when it hits the mirrors and update bug
I saw on a friend's machine after his install failed (no wonder with make.conf looking like that). I assumed it was because the network he ran mirrorselect on redirects every http request to a local login server (so you have to use a webbrowser first to authenticate and then the gateway changes its firewall rules I guess). Basically, just like NoCatAuth if you're famillar with that. Is it possible thats what we're seeing here?
