bufferevents is horribly broken and buggy in Tor. It shouldn't be used by anyone with any version of Tor. Core Tor devs recommend against anyone ever enabling it. One relevant Tor ticket: https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/19450 bufferevents isn't even an option anymore as of 0.2.9.2 (all bufferevent code is removed), and the testing 0.2.9.4_alpha package reflects that. But none of the stable gentoo Tor packages should allow enabling it either.
