emerge unmerge mozilla emerge -O firefox Why do I have to have the launcher anyway, if the firefox is the only browser I want to have on my system? Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce:
The launcher is a shell script that runs firefox.
I get this weird feeling you're going to reopen this bug. Please don't. Here's the simple explanation: You need a script to start the browser, in order to set up variables and such. mozilla-launcher is just a combined script that handles any of mozilla, firefox or thunderbird. If you want to write your own script, you can do that, but the official Gentoo mozilla/ff/tb installations all require mozilla-launcher.
I see, that's a script. The bug was about why it needed. I intstalled it after noticing a mention about mozilla-launcher in the emerge output and it did not help in anyway.
ah... Damn, you outwrote me :)
I still don't like the script, so I removed it and just put symlinks in /usr/bin. But that's only me.
The script is 12K. Firefox is about 20M. Do you feel like you're saving space or something? Would you like it better if it were packaged with the firefox ebuild instead of in a separate ebuild? The main reason it's in a separate ebuild is so that you don't have to rebuild firefox every time that something in the script needs to change. I should have mentioned this in comment 2: If you're not willing to use mozilla-launcher, then please don't file *any* Gentoo bugs against mozilla/firefox/thunderbird. I'm not going to waste my time on broken setups.
I see no point in it (and don't like what it does and how). But... I think I can't file any bugs against gentoo anyway, by ignoring devfs, not needing udev, avoiding gnome-desktop and its control center, and using firefox/mozilla only if I feel undecided about some weird site. And perhaps, I shall ignore you as well, just for the sake of completeness.

the 12k of creeping workarounds.
