Looks like x11-themes/gnome-icon-theme is stale and is superseded by x11-themes/adwaita-icon-theme (at least that's my guess). leio suggests that if that's the case we may wish to give last rites to gnome-icon-theme.
regarding the last riting thought - gtk+:2 writes gnome, not adwaita, into default gtkrc; might want to re-research that too (we just finished doing that for the gtk-theme-name default, but not gtk-icon-theme-name)
[master 7aadea4] virtual/freedesktop-icon-theme: x11-themes/adwaita-icon-theme is another provider for this 1 file changed, 3 insertions(+), 2 deletions(-)
Re-opening to handle the discussed case of look into removing gnome-icon-theme too. If you prefer a separate bug for this, file one, but lets not forget about this by not tracking it. This applies to freedesktop-bugs@ as well, as we probably then want to remove gnome-icon-theme as a provider, and (for gnome@) make sure gtk+:2 doesn't want gnome-icon-theme specifically with the gtkrc we do (or change that to adwaita or whatever is needed)
also I don't think that without a revbump we actually have any non-fresh installed users VDB actually believe it's being satisfied by adwaita-i-t? Though the revbump can be delayed until we are sure we should remove gnome-icon-theme from the list

If you want to open a tracker for (in general) removing gnome-icon-theme, ok, but for that we will need to either report the bugs automatically or probably sending a mail to gentoo-dev ML will be better, because, even if I have been reviewing that deps to try to move to adwaita when possible, there are still many reverse deps pending to be checked (it's the same for other obsolete packages like the old scrollkeeper metapackage)
