Description Chani 2004-08-07 13:58:34 UTC
I got through the bootstrapping using distcc with no errors... then went to emerge system, and module-init-tools keeps failing. I'm using the smp kernel, 'cause the usual gentoo and gentoo-nofb would panic in the middle of booting... it's an old celeron comp.

disabling distcc and running ldconfig have no effect on the problem.

here's the error:

gcc -static -O2 -march=pentium2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -o insmod.static insmod.o insmod_64.o kallsyms_64.o rmmod.o modprobe.o lsmod.o ksyms.o kallsyms.o ../obj/libobj.a ../util/libutil.a
/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.3/../../../../i686-pc-linux-gnu/bin/ld: cannot find -lc
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[1]: *** [insmod.static] Error 1

make: *** [all] Error 2

!!! ERROR: sys-apps/module-init-tools-3.0-r2 failed.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 80, Exitcode 2
!!! emake modutils failed

basically, I can't install gentoo now. :(

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.boot smp on 2004.1 livecd
2.finish stage 1 bootstrapping (with distcc)
3.emerge system

Actual Results:
sys-apps/module-init-tools-3.0-r2 fails to emerge

Expected Results:
sys-apps/module-init-tools-3.0-r2 should emerge, darnit

well, there was some sort of problem with distcc at the end of bootstrapping, where
it couldn't write to some files in /.distcc iirc, but it didn't seem to affect the bootstrap
process itself... and module-init-tools fails regardless of whether distcc is running.

post emerge info please.

(distcc is disabled right now, btw)
Comment 3 Chani 2004-08-07 15:08:51 UTC
hmm, maybe this is part of the problem: ls: /usr/lib/libc.a: No such file or directory
Comment 4 Chani 2004-08-07 15:20:13 UTC
nevermind... it *is* distcc's fault. tried to emerge libc and got this:

--------------------------- ACCESS VIOLATION SUMMARY ---------------------------
LOG FILE = "/tmp/sandbox-sys-libs_-_glibc-2.3.3.20040420-16117.log"

Comment 5 Chani 2004-08-07 16:22:22 UTC
meh, I'll just redo the whole bootstrap.sh without distcc... I'll check on it in a few days to see if it worked...
Comment 6 Chani 2004-08-08 03:48:47 UTC
yeah, this isn't a problem with module-init-tools at all, it's a distcc problem of some sort. my fault for not wanting to believe it.

should I resolve this bug as INVALID, or what?
Comment 7 Mr. Bones. (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-08-08 04:06:28 UTC
I can do that for you.
