Please attach ebuild environment /var/tmp/portage/net-libs/gtk-vnc-0.6.0/temp/environment, I see no such call in inherit eclasses.
Created attachment 450316 [details] gtk-vnc-0.6.0_environment.gz Environment file attached now.
Ok I don't get it, I'll call in portage reinforcements. For some reason, it looks like gnome2_src_install calls default which should be default_src_install but for some reason is default_pkg_preinst here. Could this be some bug in portage ?
The call stack in comment #0 shows that some user code in /etc/portage/bashrc is triggering this.
For sure here are my /etc/portage/bashrc cause there has to be a change in time, not fully sure if my commented out lines from below are correct: #!/bin/bash SANDBOX_ON=0 install -d `dirname /usr/portage/distfiles/probe` if [ "$EBUILD_PHASE" != "depend" ] then echo -n "$P.$EBUILD_PHASE -" >> /usr/portage/distfiles/probe # if there are less than 100 device nodes.... if [ `ls /dev | wc -l` -lt 100 ] then { cd /dev; find > /usr/portage/distfiles/probe.$P.$EBUILD_PHASE.log; } echo " *** TRUE *** - logged to /usr/portage/distfiles/probe.$P.$EBUILD_PHASE.log" >> /usr/portage/distfiles/probe else echo " false " >> /usr/portage/distfiles/probe fi fi SANDBOX_ON=1 #old settings before, commented out now: #export LANG="en_US.UTF-8" #export FAKEROOTKEY=1
(In reply to Randy Andy from comment #6) > For sure here are my /etc/portage/bashrc > cause there has to be a change in time, not fully sure if my commented out > lines from below are correct: > > #!/bin/bash > > SANDBOX_ON=0 > > install -d `dirname /usr/portage/distfiles/probe` It's calling this install function which is found on line 2616 of the attached gtk-vnc-0.6.0_environment.gz: install () { gnome2_src_install; if [[ ${MULTIBUILD_ID} == 2.0 ]] && use python; then local GTK2_BUILDDIR="${BUILD_DIR}"; python_foreach_impl run_in_build_dir install_python; fi }
Thanks Zac for looking into. I've had a unset LC_COLLATE=C setting, therefore my logs are not in english language - sorry for that. After correcting this, the wrong environment line number changes to: gtk-vnc-0.6.0/temp/environment: line 2540: default: command not found here the whole snippet: { 2534 export GCONF_DISABLE_MAKEFILE_SCHEMA_INSTALL="1"; 2535 local sk_tmp_dir="/var/lib/scrollkeeper"; 2536 if has ${EAPI:-0} 4 5; then 2537 dodir "${sk_tmp_dir}" || die "dodir failed"; 2538 emake DESTDIR="${D}" "scrollkeeper_localstate_dir=${ED}${sk_tmp_dir} " "$@" install || die "install fail ed"; 2539 else 2540 default; 2541 fi; 2542 unset GCONF_DISABLE_MAKEFILE_SCHEMA_INSTALL; 2543 if has ${EAPI:-0} 4; then 2544 if [[ -n "${DOCS}" ]]; then 2545 dodoc ${DOCS} || die "dodoc failed"; 2546 fi; 2547 else 2548 if has ${EAPI:-0} 5; then 2549 einstalldocs; 2550 else 2551 local d; 2552 for d in HACKING MAINTAINERS; 2553 do 2554 [[ -s "${d}" ]] && dodoc "${d}"; 2555 done; 2556 fi; 2557 fi; 2558 rm -rf "${ED}${sk_tmp_dir}"; 2559 rmdir "${ED}/var/lib" 2> /dev/null; 2560 rmdir "${ED}/var" 2> /dev/null; 2561 rm -fr "${ED}/usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache"; 2562 if has ${EAPI:-0} 4; then 2563 if [[ "${GNOME2_LA_PUNT}" != "no" ]]; then 2564 ebegin "Removing .la files"; 2565 if ! use_if_iuse static-libs; then 2566 find "${D}" -name '*.la' -exec rm -f {} + || die "la file removal failed"; 2567 fi; 2568 eend; 2569 fi; 2570 else 2571 case "${GNOME2_LA_PUNT}" in 2572 yes) 2573 prune_libtool_files --modules 2574 ;; 2575 no) 2576 2577 ;; 2578 *) 2579 prune_libtool_files 2580 ;; 2581 esac; 2582 fi 2583 } Additional attached the new log and env. files.

Everything is already explained by the call stack shown in comment #0, your /etc/portage/bashrc in comment #6, and the install() function in comment #7. The only thing that I don't know is the origin of that install() function, but I guess that really doesn't matter much. You can change your /etc/portage/bashrc to force it to call the install command instead of the install function: command install -d `dirname /usr/portage/distfiles/probe`
Thanks for clarifying this, Zac. Far from that, I have no urgent need to install it. I only report it, to help to improve package quality. Best, Andy.
The install() function is defined inside src_install of the ebuild. It might be better to rename that function to _install or something like that, in order to avoid a unnecessary name collision with the commonly used install command.
Fixed without a bump in https://gitweb.gentoo.org/repo/gentoo.git/commit/?id=c447334b7b8f24fa766bd51a1159e9b9a25b337d. Thanks for reporting.
