Description sixpointzero 2016-10-10 18:59:25 UTC
I'm trying to subscribe to the gentoo-dev mailing list by replying to the following email address but I get an error that says "email address validation failed".

gentoo-dev+confsub-nomail-03e3c5b840461d96-sixpointzero=protonmail.com@lists.gentoo.org

I'm using ProtonMail and I contacted their support team and they said that -

"The relevant email standard says that the local part of an email address (the part before the @) can be up to 64 characters. This one is more than 80 characters, which is why it fails the validation. Please try complain to the service and use valid email addresses."

What should I do? Is this a problem with ProtonMail? Can I subscribe to the mailing list using any other way?

Who/what gives you that error?

You seem to have subscribed to gentoo-user just fine yesterday; other protonmail users are subscribed to various lists as well.

Trying to send a reply to the following email address via ProtonMail gives me that error.

gentoo-dev+confsub-nomail-03e3c5b840461d96-sixpointzero=protonmail.com@lists.gentoo.org

I was able to subscribe to gentoo-user by replying via Guerilla Mail. I tried doing that again to subscribe to gentoo-dev but wasn't successful (I got no reply confirming my subscription to gentoo-dev).

The same problem happens with Tutanota [1]. I'm unable to reply to the email address that would confirm my subscription.

I'm sorry to say but this is a problem with software we're using to manage mailing lists (mlmmj) and the 'long' addresses are hard-coded into the code. I'll try to report this upstream later today and try to work out a solution.

Bad news is that such a strict forcing of rules as seemingly done by ProtonMail is rather uncommon. That's why you're going to hit more issues like this one, and it would be really preferable if ProtonMail people relaxed their rules.

I can add you manually to our mailing lists if you'd like. Just post the list of lists you'd like to be subscribed to, along with your preferences that you'd like to get applied, and your name (if desired).

It's not just ProtonMail. I tried to subscribe to the gentoo-dev mailing list using Tutanota too but that failed as well.

From what I've gathered, it's Gentoo's mailing list software that is at fault.

I realize that other email service providers such as Gmail might not impose these restrictions but I don't want to use them for various reasons.

Thanks but I'd like to see a permanent solution to this problem because I probably won't be the only one who'll be affected by it.

I've mailed the mlmmj mailing list and will let you know if we can get a solution.

I appreciate your effort but why use a mailing list software that seems to have no activity in its mailing lists? [1] What about other software such as Discourse [2], GNU Mailman [3] and phpList [4]?

I think we are nominally happy with our current ML software.

I regret that this is a known bug but I think its something we can live with for now.
