mate-applets is the last package still requiring the completely obsolete gucharmap:0 slot. I have seen it seems you are having a gtk3 USE flag to avoid it... since I guess gtk3-haters could try to prevent the switch to gtk3 in latest mate-applets... I am unsure if maybe gucharmap support could be dropped alone (Fedora was doing that in the past when they had it built against gtk2) :/

Thanks

So, currently, MATE is in the process of migrating to gtk3 only. They are slowly progressing, and it is still buggy and leaves much to be desired. For that reason, prior to the Gentoo MATE Project getting to the point where we are only supporting GTK3, I'd prefer to keep support for gucharmap:0 as users are still likely to be using it. Add to that that the mate-applets package doesn't have a configure flag for that support (IIRC), so I'd end up having to hack up my packages. That's something I'd like to avoid. Certianly, disabling broken support like the previous discussion we had on bluetooth is OK, but I think this situation is categorically different, and thus we really aren't in a position to be dropping that right now.

We are in the process of moving 1.14 into the main repo, and 1.16 in to the project repo. Upstream is shooting for 1.18 ( 1.16 and 1.17 are in development now) to be the first fully gtk3 release. I'd like to keep gucharmap:0 support until that point.

Is gucharmap:0 a maintenance burden at the moment, or is this just an effort to clean out older packages?

It's a try to finally try to clean that completely obsolete package that has only one reverse dep... but we can wait of course ;)
