It seems more complicated than that. The specific work related to this breakage seems to be as yet unfinished, and is detailed in the upstream bug: http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/1209812 It might be worth noting that they mention in that bug that apparently they forked firefox for OSX builds starting with 45.0; I'm going to follow up on that as well since patches against that fork may be very relevant to ppc going forward.
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1269654 might also be relevant. On Ubuntu MATE 16.04.x daily iso-images FireFox 47 is used which does not exhibit this bug. So I was curious is FF 49 on gentoo would work, but last time I tried with default config it failed.
Isn't Ubuntu 16.04 only available as x86 binary? I also tried to install v49, but got a segmentation fault during compile. I did not try to debug. I don't typically have much luck going off the stable branch anyway. Thunderbird 45.3 also exhibits the same GraphicsCriticalError, but I was able to reinstall 38.8 since it has not been removed from the stable branch yet.
Ubuntu MATE 16.04 and Lubuntu 16.04 have PPC iso-images. Work rather smoothly on my PowerBooks, but on the G5 the Gentoo experience is much better. Ubuntu MATE 16.04 has a working FF 47 on the latest Xenial daily iso-images, which will become 16.04.2

Thanks to a hint from deuce_wylde in #gentoo-powerpc IRC I tried different combinations of USE-flags. USE="system-icu" seems to be the relevant one, enabling it gets FF in a working state! Though these "Crash Annotation GraphicsCriticalError: |[0][GFX1]: Unknown image format 0[GFX1]" messages still constantly appear when started from terminal. www-client/firefox-52.1.0-r1 seems to have a similar problem. It starts, creating its default directories but crashes shortly afterwards: "firefox[11760]: bad frame in handle_rt_signal32: 00000000ff507a20 nip 1d4bce2c lr 1d4bce00" This time the 'crashieness' can't be fixed by building with USE="system-icu" like with FF 45.8, at least not on my machine. Would a core dump be helpful with this issue? systemd generates them automatically and I got plenty of 'em.
